Tour de France

Helping a hospital emergency preparedness team for the doubling of the local population due to the Tour De France’s historic visit in 2014. Operational checklists like this allowed the organisation to preplan trigger points for both ED activity and inpatient flow. This removed the pressure of making decisions on the day about closing the department and diverting patients. This put that decision in the hands of the executive team weeks in advance of the critical weekend. This allowed the clinical staff to concentrate on patients rather than dealing with a potentially catastrophically escalating situation. Thankfully the weekend passed without major incident, unless you were Mark Cavendish (who fell yards from the finish line). An example of turning complex operational information into an easy to use and easy to understand checklist.
